Job Summary:
The Semi-Solid Preparations Operator is responsible for the execution of manufacturing processes for topical and semi-solid dosage forms such as ointments, creams and gels. This includes raw material weighing, loading, mixing, emulsifying and transferring products in accordance with approved Batch Manufacturing Records (BMRs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). The operator is also expected to operate homogenizers, vacuum mixers and transfer systems, perform in-process checks for viscosity, homogeneity and pH and ensure equipment and area cleanliness. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience in semi-solid processing, a strong understanding of hygiene and cross-contamination controls, and a commitment to high-quality standards in a regulated production environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate mixing, homogenizing and vacuum processing equipment used in the manufacture of ointments, creams and gels.
- Weigh and load raw materials into processing vessels according to approved batch manufacturing records (BMRs).
- Monitor temperature, mixing speed and other process parameters to ensure consistent product quality.
- Conduct in-process checks including pH, viscosity, appearance and uniformity of semi-solid products.
- Transfer finished bulk to holding vessels or filling lines under hygienic conditions.
- Clean and sanitize manufacturing equipment, utensils and rooms as per cleaning SOPs.
- Document all operations, cleaning and observations in production logs and batch records.
- Report any equipment malfunction, batch deviation or safety incident to the line supervisor immediately.
- Assist in setup, changeover and dismantling of process equipment.
- Ensure adherence to gowning procedures, personal hygiene and safety regulations at all times.
Academic Qualifications:
Minimum of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). A certificate or diploma in Industrial Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing or a related technical field will be an added advantage.
Experience and Competencies:
- Minimum of 3–4 years of relevant experience in a pharmaceutical or cosmetics manufacturing environment involving semi-solid or topical products.
- Familiarity with ointment/cream processing equipment, cleaning validation, and cGMP documentation.
- Knowledge of product characteristics such as pH, viscosity, and emulsion stability.
- Ability to follow written instructions, maintain accurate records, and work in a team-oriented environment.
- Physically fit and willing to work in a fast-paced and controlled manufacturing environment.
